The Colorado Springs Utilities Water Engineering Support design team is looking for an AutoCAD Designer. As a member of the Engineering Support design team, you will have the opportunity to use your technical skills in a fast-paced, collaborative environment to design water infrastructure projects as you support engineering activities related to the design of water and wastewater main replacement projects. This position will be responsible for all phases of design, from records research to stakeholder engagement, and AutoCAD drafting through construction support. As an CAD Designer , your key areas of focus will include:

  • Advanced level engineering support utilizing AutoCAD Civil 3D software for utility design projects

  • Preparing various drawings of topographic maps, existing utility facilities, and proposed utility structures

  • Assuring conformance with established engineering practices, design criteria, construction methods, material standards, and safety codes

  • Preparing and/or analyzing boundary survey maps and topographic maps using plan and profile survey data, FIMS (GIS) data, and historical records

  • Preparing material lists and evaluating appropriate application of materials on assigned projects

  • Performing on-site field condition inspections to provide technical information for manuals, construction plans, and historical records verification

  • Preparing drawings of plans, charts, maps, and schematics of utility facilities and structures

  • Leading a team of designers, overseeing the quality of AutoCAD templates, and instructing staff inefficient utilization of the tool

  • Researching data and performing calculations for the design of water and wastewater mains

Preferred Technical Skills

  • Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel)

  • Process mechanical and building mechanical design drawing production - from 2D and 3D models (Preferred but not required)

  • General 3D solids modeling (Preferred but not required)

  • Building information modeling (BIM) (Preferred by not required)

What will it take to be successful? The successful candidate should at minimum have an associate's degree in engineering (or a comparable technical field.) You will use critical thinking to extract information from multiple data sources and apply sound engineering judgment in each phase of the design process. The ability to organize, track and manage schedules, and balance multiple projects are critical to this position. Individuals who exhibit effective communication skills, a professional demeanor, and flexibility will excel in this position. Candidates should be proficient at drafting construction documents using AutoCAD Civil 3D, knowledge of ArcGIS is desirable but not required.
