Directional Drilling Specialist - Apprentice

Colorado Springs Utilities has been operating as a municipal four-service utility since 1924, proudly providing electricity, natural gas, water, and wastewater to our citizen owners. Our Directional Drilling team is actively seeking a talented individual who will offer expertise in the area of directional drilling as a Construction/Maintenance Specialist. In this role, you will be responsible for various duties, including maintaining and operating directional drilling equipment, drilling fluid mixing equipment, vacuum excavation equipment, and assisting in barricading and traffic control. In addition, you will be required to use excavating equipment, and hand tools, comply with construction safety standards and work with a team to support the installation of underground electric, gas, and water systems, and construction restoration activities.

Key areas of focus...

  • Operating directional drills, hydro-vac excavation equipment, drilling fluid mixing equipment, and Digi-trac locating equipment, and hydraulic & fusing equipment

  • Working with electric, gas, and water/wastewater to install new service lines, gas main, and streetlights

  • Working with primary and secondary electric lines

  • Measuring existing utility lines for crossings, understanding and sketching pothole logs

  • Communicating with supervisor, co-workers, and the general public, reading and interpreting maps, and operating two-way radios

  • Maintaining compliance with company policies and procedures

***This position requires the successful candidate to work overtime, weekends, holidays, etc. as business needs dictate.

You will be expected to follow safety rules and company standards and work in confined spaces and on a crew. In addition, you will be required to complete training that will be evaluated every 6 months for successful completion.

Who are you... you will have acquired more than 4 years of related construction experience. The ideal candidate will have directional drilling Vacuum Truck experience and knowledge of basic mechanical and hydraulic principles. Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) w/ tanker and air brake endorsements are required at the time of hire or must be obtained within six months of hire.
