These two positions reside within the Electric Planning and Operations group under the Energy Acquisition Engineering and Planning department.

While both of these positions will take on a wide variety of distribution responsibilities, one of the positions will be more Operationally focused and the other will be more Planning focused. You will be working with a team of seasoned Electrical Engineers to accomplish critical tasks and solve complex problems using your expertise to safely, economically and reliably meet electric power needs for the future of Colorado Springs.

Both positions will include responsibilities such as:

  • Performing circuit analysis reviews for loading, phase balancing, voltages, reactive power, protection coordination and contingency planning using Synergi® Electric modeling software

  • Coordinating line protection devices including reclosers, line fuses and interrupter switches while working with the System Protection Engineer to recommend distribution feeder breaker settings

  • Supporting project planning, project management and asset management initiatives, as well as being a data steward to ensure information from the field gets back to the models and systems

  • Assisting other engineers with Smart Grid, Distributed Energy Resources (DER) and secondary-voltage network system studies, data analysis, project management, and process documentation

  • Providing technical support to internal stakeholders including Operations, Field Engineers, Account Managers and other departments

Operational responsibilities will also include:

  • Participating in a Standby Engineer rotation that provides 24/7 engineering support

  • Providing operational support in fault locating, voltage issues and transformer overloads with root-cause analysis, in addition to supporting outage coordination and safety procedures

  • Validating, compiling and analyzing system reliability performance data for project recommendations and reporting

  • Reviewing DER installations and Conservation Voltage Reduction implementations to ensure design and standards adherence

  • Developing logic for and analyzing data from various electronic devices such as power quality meters, RFI locating devices, and controllers for automated transfer schemes

Planning responsibilities will also include:

  • Using Synergi® Electric to perform long-range small area forecast studies, capacitor placement studies, DER voltage analysis and developing innovative system improvement projects

  • Leading asset management initiatives to develop risk models based on consequence data and performance analytics

  • Developing technical reports and system master plans based on study results, alternatives analysis, cost estimates, risk profiles and requirement criteria using decision making techniques

  • Supporting other Engineers with Smart Grid projects, electric system forecasting, system planning process improvements and ten year capital budget preparation

Why should you apply? As a professional in this position, you will be making significant contributions to the distribution power system with innovative projects and processes for the betterment of the Colorado Springs community. Working with a high-performance team of Engineers, you’ll participate in the evaluation, analysis, coordination and implementation of short- and long-term planning for reliability and capacity expansion as well as future Smart Grid and renewable applications.

What will it take to be successful in this position?

  • A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university is required (emphasis in Electric Power Systems is preferred).

  • Four or more years of experience in distribution system planning, operations engineering, system protection, power systems design standards, or a related field is highly desired.

  • Strong communication, collaboration, technical writing, spreadsheet manipulation and project management skills are critical to this position.

  • Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus.
