Electrical Engineer (IV) - Substations

Colorado Springs Utilities is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to join the Substation and Transmission Engineering group. Our electric system is growing, and we are building our substation engineering team for the future.

You will be using your engineering expertise to help sustain and maintain the needs of the Colorado Springs Utilities transmission and distribution systems today, tomorrow, and into the future. As a Senior Electrical Engineer, you will be the subject matter expert for all Substation Equipment, including:

  • Power transformers, arc-resistance switchgears, mobile substations, batteries, power circuit breakers, high-voltage disconnect switches, high-voltage and distribution capacitor banks, series reactors, etc., including:

  • Developing and maintaining technical specifications

  • Leading substation equipment procurements

  • Performing equipment design reviews and oversee/analyze factory acceptance tests

  • Developing and/or maintaining equipment operating manuals

  • Forecasting and planning equipment replacements

  • Analyzing and interpreting the results of various substation equipment tests and recommending appropriate actions to be taken

  • Analyzing and prioritizing maintenance work and develop maintenance intervals and practices for all substation equipment

Additionally, you will be responsible for:

  • Serving as Subject Matter Expert for relevant NERC standards (PRC-005 and FAC-008)

  • Providing technical support for field personnel as needed, including after-hours

  • Providing technical support to design engineers for substation projects

  • Providing guidance on standards for substation spare parts, materials, and equipment; and incorporating the necessary material/equipment into the system

  • Developing, maintaining, and administering relevant training to substation personnel, including the Substation Hazard Communication training

  • Training and mentoring Maintenance Staff Engineers

What will it take to be successful in this position?

  • A Bachelor's degree in Power System Engineering or Electrical Engineering from an accredited program is required for this position; and 7 or more years professional level Substation Maintenance Engineering or a combination of Substation Maintenance Engineering and Substation Design Engineering. An emphasis in Power Systems is strongly preferred.

  • A Professional Engineer (PE) certification and/or Masters in Engineering are also desired, but not required.

  • The ideal candidate will also possess excellent communications skills; the ability to quickly make prioritization adjustments due to system and operational needs; have a thorough understanding of various regulations unique to substations, i.e. EPA, Wildlife Protection, etc. You must be a team player and someone who demonstrates an invested interest in mentoring other engineers on our team.

This job is eligible for relocation assistance to aid with the costs associated with moving to the Colorado Springs area.
