Electrical Engineer - Relay Protection Maintenance

Colorado Springs Utilities is seeking an Electrical Engineer (II) in the role of Relay Protection Maintenance Engineer supporting the electric system protection testing and maintenance program to comply with NERC requirements.

In this job, you will work alongside a Principal Protection Engineer (V) as you develop an understanding of our protection philosophies and policies for Colorado Springs Utilities. You will leverage your engineering expertise to ensure relay settings and system protection equipment are accurately deployed, tested, and maintained for the reliable operation of our transmission and distribution systems today, tomorrow, and into the future.

Some of the additional ways in which you will make an impact include:

  • Supporting our NERC PRC-005 Standard compliance by reviewing test results and maintaining testing documentation in Doble PowerBase for relays, trip checks, CT/PT verification, and communication checks for substation protection relay settings, including transmission and distribution line protection, transformer differentials, bus differentials, breaker failure, and more

  • Monitoring, reviewing, and updating documentation to ensure compliance with testing and maintenance related to NERC standards, and serving as a subject matter expert for audits

  • Participating and providing input in the development of engineering, construction, and maintenance standards

  • Strengthening technical knowledge as needed for developing system protection understanding related to protection system projects and maintenance

  • Updating equipment inventories in Doble PowerBase as protection system equipment is added, replaced, and removed.

  • Providing technical support to design and setting engineers from a maintenance perspective through the design, construction, commissioning, and energization of substation equipment

  • Coordinating with Relay and Instrumentation Controls to resolve test result issues during maintenance and new commissioning testing

Who You Are...

  • Relevant and progressively responsible high voltage substation and transmission system protection knowledge, with experience in relay testing or protection system design

  • Experience with Doble PowerBase and RTS software or equivalent is valued

  • Bachelor's degree in Power System Engineering or Electrical Engineering is required; an emphasis in Power Systems is valued

  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certification is preferred; (Assistance for the selected candidate may be provided to obtain the EIT)
