Colorado Springs Utilities is looking to add you as their newest member. We are currently hiring for an Environmental Specialist . This opportunity plays an essential role in maintaining the operational performance goals of the Water Resource Recovery Facilities and will report to the Water Resource Recovery Facilities Manager with primary internal customers being the Plant Superintendents, Supervisors and operations, maintenance and IEC staff. In this role, you will be responsible for collaborating with the Las Vegas, J.D. Phillips, and Clear Springs Ranch plants to provide strategic direction for advancing, maintaining and optimizing process control strategies for the plants and partner with each plant on solving problems and developing strategies for optimal treatment performance among all plants. In addition, you will support the team in training and special projects. Training activities will include the development of an OJT program to include process control training and technical sessions on identified operational activities. Special projects may include operational support of optimization projects, troubleshooting, and development of strategies for new capital projects.

The role requires strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills with customers, building effective teams, and fostering cooperation among facilities and workgroups. In addition, you will provide assistance in developing and mentoring staff as required.

Essential functions and responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • Ability to work with the Plant Superintendents, Supervisors, WRRF Manager and operations, maintenance and IEC staff to identify and prioritize process control and project requirements.

  • Facilitate collaboration among the plants to ensure that there are effective communication and problem solving to address operational challenges.

  • Ability to identify opportunities to improve processes to optimize plant performance with a focus on cost-effectiveness.

  • Support the WWT A’s on lessons learned activities concerning operational troubleshooting

  • Ability to run project teams and coordinate resource requirements with customers.

  • Ability to direct project meetings to facilitate discussion and decision making; Lead the Combined Plant Meeting for WRRF Facilities.

  • Develops and conducts training programs for operations staff with the support of each plant to include process control and operational activities.

  • Plans and conducts assigned technical research projects with a moderate level of guidance and direction.

  • Evaluates and interprets regulations for applicability to operations; Assisting with Permit related issues and “renewals” as needed.

  • Evaluates operations and projects, providing professional consultation to ensure and improve compliance with environmental regulations and support environmental stewardship. Assists Operations with environmental compliance, such as permit-related tasks and hazardous material and waste management.

  • Works with Superintendents/Supervisors in support of inspections and audits as required.

  • Demonstrate compliance with, and enforce Environmental Health & Safety rules and regulations at all times.

  • Monitors and investigates industry standards, best practices and technological advances to help plants stay current.

  • Participates in regional and state environmental, educational and technical committees, evaluates proposed regulatory changes and communicates information appropriately.

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree in a natural science or engineering (typically civil, chemical or environmental). Previous experience in the water, wastewater utilities industry is preferred along with a Class A Wastewater Treatment certificate.
