Environmental Technician

Colorado Springs Utilities is looking for an Environmental Technician . In this position, you will be responsible for performing technical support in coordinating, collecting, reviewing, validating, and/or tracking environmental quality field data to aid in studies and for regulatory compliance purposes. You will provide support to all four of our utility services (i.e., electric, natural gas, water, and wastewater).

Key Areas of Focus...

Groundwater Quality Monitoring

  • Be knowledgeable of common groundwater sampling techniques (such as low-flow / micro purge, peristaltic, and bailing) and environmental sampling procedures/protocols

  • Schedule, coordinate, and perform groundwater monitoring well measurements and sampling in accordance with set monitoring plans and environmental procedures. Maintain quality control throughout the sample collection process

  • Operate, maintain, calibrate, troubleshoot, and repair environmental monitoring equipment (such as water quality meters and sensors, generators, air compressors, and pumps)

  • Manage environmental recordkeeping activities, including completing detailed field documentation and chain of custody

  • Maintain, transfer, and input data into databases

  • Work as a Team on regulatory-related plans and reporting activities

Stormwater Compliance

  • Be knowledgeable in the principles and practices of erosion and sediment control and pollution prevention, and with the skills to assess site conditions that could impact stormwater quality and to assess the effectiveness of stormwater controls implemented in relation to permit requirement

  • Conduct stormwater inspections at construction sites and industrial facilities, and assist in the preparation and updates of stormwater management plans and permits

  • Interpret construction drawings and grading erosion control plans

  • Assist with regulatory documentation, recordkeeping, and reporting

  • Collaborate with Project Managers, construction crews, and plant personnel

Petroleum Storage Tank Compliance and Spill Prevention, Control, & Countermeasure (SPCC) Plans

  • Be familiar with petroleum storage tank systems, SPCC Plan requirements, and related rules/regulations

  • Coordinate and perform routine petroleum storage tank inspections, and aid with compliance management

  • Assist with SPCC Plan inspections and plan updates

Other environmental tasks and projects, as assigned, may potentially include activities supporting or related to the planning and construction of electric, natural gas, water, and wastewater projects; compliance management of landfills (i.e., coal combustion residuals, biosolids, water treatment residuals, and construction & demolition debris) and process water impoundments; environmental site assessments and remediation; legislative and rulemaking matters; environmental permitting; and waste management.

Additionally, we are looking for individuals who exemplify the following, so please make sure to highlight them on your resume/application:

  • Prior work experience in groundwater quality monitoring

  • A high school diploma/GED is required, and an associate degree in environmental science, biology, chemistry, geology, natural resources, or similar is desirable

  • Valid Colorado Driver’s License (this position will involve both field and office tasks roughly 75% and 25%, respectively

  • Ability to perform outdoor field work involving occasional moderate physical exertion (up to 50 pounds), traverse non-paved terrains, and be exposed to weather conditions typical to the Colorado Springs region

  • Completion of the City of Colorado Springs Stormwater Enterprise’s approved “Stormwater Management and Erosion Control During Construction” training, the Colorado Division of Oil & Public Safety’s UST Operator Training, and/or OSHA’s 40-Hour Hazwoper course is beneficial

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word & Excel required. Skills with AutoCAD and/or ArcGIS are desirable
