Grow with us...

Colorado Springs Utilities is hiring two Gas Pipefitter Apprentices. This is a four-year paid apprenticeship program that will prepare you to safely perform construction, installation, repair, and maintenance of utility gas service lines and mains.

Our Gas Pipefitter Apprenticeship program is certified through the Department of Labor (DOL), consisting of a combination of both classroom and on-the-job training. To be successful as an apprentice you must be a self-starter, maintain focus and commit to advancing your career in the gas trade. You must be capable of handling multiple projects, prioritizing tasks, working effectively under pressure, meeting deadlines, and communicating with all levels of the organization.

As a gas pipefitter apprentice you will learn to:

  • Assist in installing gas mains and service lines, repairs, and maintenance in accordance with Federal Gas Regulations

  • Use hand-operated and electric, pneumatic, and hydraulic power tools to assist with the construction and maintenance projects

  • Connect and inspect gas mains and service lines

  • Operate gas construction excavation equipment

  • Tapping pipelines

  • Preform plastic fusions; including electro and butt fusions

  • Comply with safety standards and standard operating procedures in support of an incident and injury-free workplace

  • Respond to emergencies and assist in repairs

Qualifications we seek:

  • Qualified candidates will offer a minimum of six months of construction/trade experience.

  • Class A Commerical Driver’s License (CDL) is preferred at the time of hire, otherwise, CDL must be obtained within 6 months of hire

  • Successful candidates will be self-directed and motivated to advance through the program by obtaining required knowledge, on-the-job training, scheduling evaluations and passing the written testing requirements along the way

Apprentice pay schedule:

  • Step one pay as an apprentice is currently $24.39/hr. Apprentices can expect a pay bump with each completed step (8-step program/6 months on average per step). Journey level pipefitters are paid $34.69/hr.

Additional requirements and considerations:

  • While an Apprentice at Colorado Springs Utilities, you are not eligible to apply to any other positions at Colorado Springs Utilities

  • Starting in year three (3) of the apprenticeship program, you will be designated as a first responder for emergencies. This means you will be required to live in the service territory and receive at least one utility service (gas, electric, or water)

  • You will be required to pull stand-by, overtime, weekends, holidays, and 24-hour call-outs as the business needs demand. In addition, you will work in hazardous conditions and be prepared to work in inclement weather

  • This position is part of a formal apprenticeship program within the Gas Pipefitter trade. As such, pay for this position will begin at the entry-level unless previous apprenticeship or gas experience documentation is provided and approved by our apprentice committee
