Lead Analyst

Colorado Springs Utilities is seeking a Lead Analyst that will have responsibility for a multitude of detailed big data analysis projects. This position works directly for our Fuels and Purchase Power team. The Lead Analyst will be responsible for completing financial analysis for teams within the Energy Supply Department and will help manage the annual budget, conduct cash flow meetings with power plant personnel, and ensure prompt response to all data requests made to the Energy Supply Department.

In this role, you will be able to use your big data analytical skills to assist in production modeling, energy market, and financial analysis. Ultimately, the data analysis performed will lead to project or program results, continuation, funding, and strategic direction. Project management knowledge will be used to define objectives, develop plans, and measure the results of each of the implemented tasks. In addition, you will lead a team of analysts in providing excellent customer service and analytical support for the team.

Your job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Complete Financial Reports for Department including budget to actuals, Electric Cost Adjustment (ECA)/Gas Cost Adjustment (GCA) variance reports, economic indicators for power plants

  • Conducting project cash flow meetings with power plant personnel

  • Coordinating with Fixed Asset accounting group during decommissioning of power plant assets

  • Leading annual budget planning coordination with other Energy financial teams

  • Performing unit outage cost reporting using Production Modeling Tools

  • Leading team with receipt of internal and external data requests (Media, Customer requests, CSU, etc.) and ensure delegation and prompt response.

  • Calculating, maintaining and categorizing traders margin for accuracy after the fact using Production Model and trader notes (i.e. curtailments/performance issues/unit trips)

  • Contract monitoring of long term Electric contracts

  • Ad-hoc analysis needed from traders around strategies

  • Conducting complex cost-benefit, labor, economic, financial and systems analyses, identifies trends, evaluates data, formulates innovative plans, prepares and delivers reports and expertly presents information to key stakeholders internal and external of the organization.

  • Managing and leading multiple projects as assigned

  • Design and track performance tools

What will it take to be successful? Future Fuels and Purchase Power strategies and measurements of success will be dependent on the results produced by the analysis this person performs. For this reason and due to the heavy emphasis on energy research and analysis, a bachelor’s degree with a focus in business, technology, engineering or related discipline is desired (a Master’s degree or higher is preferred). Additionally, experience performing research using data mining techniques is very helpful as you will be expected to query Colorado Springs Utilities’ systems and databases and pull data and information into a single, comprehensive report. Knowledge of programming in Microsoft Power BI,R, SQL, and VBA are highly desired. Knowledge and experience in the energy field is preferred. The person in this position will be expected to be innovative, independent, self-motivated, goal oriented, and think outside the box when determining the best approach to accomplish requests for data analysis. Project and/or team leadership experience is desired.
