Why Should You Join Our Team?

As a Senior Electrical Distribution Engineer , you will join our Electric Planning department responsible for ensuring the reliability, performance, and grid modernization of our electric distribution system as Colorado Springs continues to expand its infrastructure. Our team leads modeling efforts to determine long-term future growth, identifies potential constraints on our system, and develops the scope, rough order of magnitude estimate, and timeline for projects including infrastructure and innovative solutions for our electric distribution system. In this role, you will provide technical direction, guidance, expertise, and oversight to our team of engineers to support the success of our future projects around electric distribution. You will also be directly responsible for supporting the design and direction of more complex and high-profile projects to support the rapidly expanding electric distribution infrastructure across our service territory.

How Will You Make an Impact?

  • Performing circuit analysis reviews for loading, phase balancing, voltages, reactive power, protection coordination, and contingency planning using Synergi® Electric modeling software

  • Producing, long-term small area forecast studies and strategies that incorporate considerations of capacitor placement, DER placement, EV saturation, and DSM programs to optimize asset usage

  • Developing system improvement projects with technical reports including study assumptions, study results, alternatives analyses, cost estimates, risk profiles, and requirement criteria to help with capital budget preparation

  • Providing design reviews, technical training, and project support to Field Engineers and other internal stakeholders

  • Coordinating line protection devices including reclosers, line fuses, and interrupter switches while working with the System Protection Engineer to recommend distribution feeder breaker settings

  • Performing project planning, project management, and asset management initiatives, as well as being a data steward to ensure information from the field gets back to the models and systems

  • Providing technical support to internal stakeholders including Operations, Field Engineers, Account Managers, and other departments

  • Participating in standby rotation 24/7 approximately one week per month to support Operations, and performing investigations for electrical contacts

Additional areas of support may include:

  • Updating and maintaining the Distribution Electric System Forecast using historical data and trends to provide long-term outlook of system capacity needs and capabilities

  • Utilizing tools (e.g., LoadSEER) to run forecasting scenarios including potential annexations, distributed energy resources, electric vehicles, and customer programs to target high-growth and technology opportunity areas

  • Performing Downtown Secondary Network Engineering analysis and planning solutions while supporting the downtown crew

  • Leading asset management initiatives to develop risk models based on consequence data and performance analytics

  • Developing and supporting mobile applications for field personnel to gather condition and equipment data

  • Supporting the administration of Synergi®Electric and LoadSEER models

  • Supporting changes to electric distribution planning, protection, and design guidelines.

Who You Are

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering is required; Master's degree in Electrical Engineering is valued

  • Engineer in Training (EIT) and Professional Engineer (PE) certifications are required, or the ability to obtain within 1-2 years of hire

  • Extensive and progressively responsible electric distribution engineering experience including system protection, automated device programming, and operational practices

  • Experience usingSynergi®Electric and LoadSEER modeling software is highly beneficial

  • Ability and desire to lead, mentor, train, and support other field and support engineers on various projects and skillsets

  • Ability to tailor communication and information in a way that ensures understanding and secures buy-in and trust
