Join our team as a Senior Relay Protection and Controls Technician at Colorado Springs Utilities. Our relay techs manage their own schedules, supporting a service territory that is easily accessible within a 20-30 minute drive. As a municipal four-service utility, Colorado Springs Utilities is both an owner and operator of our power generation and transmission equipment. Our electric system consists of 57 substations, 232 miles of transmission lines, and 8 power generation plants, which will allow you the diversity of work and the opportunity to flex your problem-solving skills in a variety of environments.
Starting pay rate is $59.65/hr. Your pay rate, upon successfully completing probation (typically 6 months), will increase to a single pay rate, which is currently $62.63/hr
How you’ll enjoy spending your day:
Installing, calibrating, maintaining, testing, troubleshooting, tuning, and repairing critical protection and control systems, with emphasis on quality assurance for the following systems or equipment, relay and control systems and high-speed communication-assisted relay schemes (electro-mechanical, solid state, and microprocessor-based)
Working on Transmission, Distribution, and Substation protection devices
Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems
Control systems, logic controllers, and operating systems via serial and networked communications
System performance monitoring equipment (e.g., fault recorders, SERs, and power quality monitors)
Protective relay and data channels via fiber optics, copper pair, and telecommunications carriers associated with various communication systems
Programming, installing, testing, troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing all protective relay equipment
Ensuring compliance with mandated maintenance intervals on the bulk power system and submitting required documentation to demonstrate compliance
Recommending, modifying, and installing new hardware and software components and/or systems
Assisting design engineers in reviewing, developing, and maintaining detailed drawing packages and documentation as needed to modify circuitry for various installations, upgrades, and improvements
Assuming a lead role in equipment installation during the commissioning of projects
What you’ll bring to the table:
An associates degree in electronics, power systems engineering or a related field is preferred
Highly qualified candidates will have completed a formal relay technician apprenticeship or training program, or have considerable work experience in lieu or formal training/certificates
As a senior, you must demonstrate progressive experience in the areas of transmission line and substation protective relay control systems and SCADA/Automation, installation, testing, and troubleshooting. We are also interested in learning about your experience in the following areas so be sure to highlight these on your application or resume:

Electrical protection principles and theories
Power system protective relaying and control schemes
Electronics, pneumatics, electro-hydraulic and electrical principles and theories

Programming languages and operating systems specific to tasks and equipment
National Electrical and National Electric Safety Codes
Relay and Control Operational and Safety Procedures
Electric generation, transmission, and distribution systems, equipment and safety procedures
