Senior Substation Project Engineer

Colorado Springs Utilities is seeking a Senior Project Engineer to join the Substation and Transmission Engineering group. You will have a strong background in protection system and high voltage substation design. Your primary job responsibility will be performing electrical design, equipment selection and procurement, and project/construction management tasks to complete substation projects. The roles and responsibilities of this position fall under three areas; engineering design, project management and procurement management.

Engineering Design: Your engineering expertise to produce quality and accurate designs works to ensure that the substation equipment and controls will serve the needs of the Colorado Springs Utilities transmission and distribution systems today, tomorrow and into the future. To this end, you will be responsible for:

  • Participation and input in developing engineering and construction standards

  • Involvement in teaching co-workers within the engineering department

  • Strengthening technical knowledge as needed for designing substation equipment projects and specifications

  • Keeping current with changing standards

  • Engaging other groups in the organization in technical discussions and awareness

  • Producing quality design packages necessary for installing new and replacing aged substation equipment and controls

  • Providing technical support related to Substations

Project Management: By bringing a technical perspective to project management efforts, from commencement through design and construction to integration, you will be instrumental in aligning project scope and execution with technical requirements while keeping projects on-time and on-budget. Key responsibilities in this area include:

  • Serving as Technical Lead in partnership with Project Manager for large projects

  • Overseeing the quality, efficiency and suitability of all technical project outputs

  • Facilitating project meetings between stakeholders

  • Generating and maintaining project schedule while coordinating with all stakeholders and system outage constraints (Microsoft project or Primavera experience preferred)

  • Managing scope, schedule and budget for smaller projects

  • Effectively communication between stakeholders and the project team

  • Technical support through design, construction, commissioning and energization

Procurement Management: Procuring the right equipment and services that conform to our standards is critical for the long term reliability of our substations. Appling your knowledge of the project and system needs, you will be responsible for:

  • Coordinating with the procurement department in order to purchase large equipment and services through bid and/or proposal processes

  • Traveling to factories for equipment design review and testing

  • Procuring materials required for project construction

  • Understanding and follow Utilities Procurement rules and policies

  • Writing statements of work to fully capture the project needs

  • Monitoring and controlling schedule with contracting service to meet project needs

What will it take to be successful in this position? A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program is required for this position; an emphasis in Power Systems engineering is strongly preferred. A Master’s Degree, Professional Engineer (PE) registration and/or Project Management Professional (PMP) certification are desired but not required. Additionally, the ideal candidate will possess 5 years of substation design experience with demonstrated expertise in creating protective relay one line / three line diagrams; current, voltage and trip schematics; and panel / equipment wiring diagrams including point-to-point and inter-panel wiring.
