As a Senior Transmission Planning Engineer , you will work on a team of dedicated and knowledgeable subject matter experts supporting our 115kV and 230kV transmission systems. We have engineering positions that focus on the operational side with day-to-day operations support and modeling analysis studies, as well as positions that are focused more on long-term electric transmission system modeling and planning. Our team’s mission is to strategically and collaboratively plan the future of safe, reliable, and competitively priced energy for the citizen owners and customers of Colorado Springs Utilities.

How you’ll make an impact as a Transmission Planning Engineer:

  • Assisting in the development of long-term Electric Transmission System forecasts and plans while identifying projects to upgrade system infrastructure, construct facilities to serve new customer loads, and enhance system reliability

  • Performing short and long-term transmission power flow, transfer capability, voltage and dynamic stability, short circuit, and post-transient analyses studies

  • Participating in regional planning activities with external groups such as the Colorado Coordinated Planning Group (CCPG), Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) Committees, and Southwest Power Pool – Western Energy Imbalance Service market (SPP-WEIS)

  • Assist in the evaluation of new facility requirements and their impacts associated with new loads, generator interconnections, and power transfer capabilities and documenting accordingly in the Large Generator Interconnection Agreement (LGIA) process

  • Collaborating with stakeholders to improve forecasting methodologies as well as preparing for potential new large customers with specialized loads like data centers

  • Supporting system resource adequacy planning by participating in the long-term, strategic Gas and Electric Integrated Resource Planning processes and working with stakeholders

  • Maintaining and reviewing NERC Standards documentation to ensure compliance with said standards, while also providing insight and input on future NERC requirements at the developmental stage

  • Supporting and educating internal stakeholders including management, Compliance, Operations, and other departments on the Bulk Electric System concerns and complexities

What will it take to be successful…

  • ​​​​A bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering is required for this position; Power Systems specialization preferred

  • Engineer in Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) registration is desired

  • Prefer four or more years of experience within the energy industry and knowledge and experience in system planning. Must be able to perform complex analysis, planning, and design functions

  • Experience using modeling applications such as Siemens PSS®E, and ASPEN is desired

  • Attention to detail and proven skills in teamwork, collaboration, initiative, and communication are a must
