Colorado Springs Utilities is hiring a Java Software Engineer to play a critical role in the operations of our IT Customer Portfolio. The IT Customer Portfolio team has primary support responsibility for our Meter-to-cash (M2C) and Customer self-service (CSS) custom off the shelf (COTS) platforms, along with several in-house developed applications. In this job, you will solve problems collaboratively with internal stakeholders by providing consistent, high-quality implementation and development services.

Technology domains and skills desired:

  • Strong Java or Groovy skills with 2-4 years of experience writing production code

  • Solid understanding of relational database concepts, including advanced SQL skills

  • Experience with two or more of the following; Unix/Linux shell scripting, Java, Groovy, Spring Boot, Python, ReactJS, Microservices, JSON/RESTful web services

  • Experience with CI/CD principles, architecture, and operations

  • Hands-on experience using Eclipse and/or Visual Studio IDE tools

  • Working knowledge of Git and GitHub version control tools

  • Experience working in Oracle databases (using both SQL and PL/SQL)

  • Experience with managing and maintaining UNIX or Linux-based application infrastructure

  • Sound problem-solving skills with linear and logical troubleshooting

What you’ll be doing:

  • Design, develop, enhance, debug, and package for release software solutions designed to support new or existing business initiatives in accordance with technical development standards and best practices

  • Consult with analysts, project teams, and end-users to validate requirements, as well as perform feasibility analysis on potential future projects to management

  • Participate in design work sessions and conduct peer code reviews

  • Build continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines using automation tools to improve software delivery processes

  • Develop and maintain well-architected build and test scripts

  • Ensure compliance with our enterprise ITIL framework including Change & Release Management processes

  • Clearly and concisely communicate information to both technical and non-technical audiences

  • Prepare technical documents including solution designs, test plans, processes, and standards

  • Maintain open communication, transparency, trust & collaboration within & across departments

Who you are…

The ideal candidate will be a self-starter, confident in their abilities, fast-paced, have 2 to 4 or more years of progressive experience in IT and the ability to demonstrate a high degree of innovation and creativity. Experience in the Utility industry is ideal. In addition, a bachelor’s degree in Computer Technology or closely related field is desirable (or an equivalent combination of education and experience).

In addition, the ideal candidate will have:

  • Ability to refactor code for reusability, readability, and maintainability in an object-oriented codebase

  • Solid background in solution design, analysis, previous software development lifecycle (SDLC) experience, and advanced troubleshooting skills

  • Understanding of software development processes and principles and be able to communicate the desired capabilities to a diverse group of stakeholders

  • Modern web development experience using JavaScript, CSS3, HTML5, jQuery, and NPM or Yarn package management a bonus

  • Oracle Utilities Customer Care and Billing (CC&B), Meter Data Management (MDM), and/or Customer To Meter (C2M) experience a bonus
