Colorado Springs Utilities is seeking a Substation Maintenance Principal Engineer to join the Substation and Transmission Engineering group. Our electric system is growing, and we are building our substation engineering team for the future.

This is an exciting, high profile opportunity to develop and execute a variety of maintenance duties related to design, expansion and upgrades of our substations. You will be using your engineering expertise to help sustain and maintain the needs of the Colorado Springs Utilities transmission and distribution systems today, tomorrow and into the future. The roles and responsibilities of this position include:

  • Performing substation transformer design review and oversee/analyze factory acceptance tests of new transformers. This will include travel to manufacturers’ facilities

  • Representing substations operations on major equipment purchase committees including the preparation of the RFP and technical specifications documents

  • Forecasting and planning equipment replacement, including developing and administering the budget for equipment replacement

  • Analyzing and prioritizing maintenance work and develop maintenance intervals for all substation equipment; develop and implement new and analyze existing maintenance intervals and practices

  • Analyzing and interpreting the results of various substation equipment tests and recommending actions to be taken in response to test results. These tests include: Dissolved Gas Analysis tests of the oil, and Doble Power Factor test results

  • Developing standards for substation spare parts and equipment and setting inventory levels based on past use, price and risk to the system

  • Developing and providing relevant training to substation personnel

  • Serving as Subject Matter Expert for relevant NERC standards

  • Providing technical support for field personnel as needed, including after-hours

What will it take to be successful in this position? A bachelor's degree in Power System Engineering or Electrical Engineering from an accredited program is required for this position, and 10 or more years professional level engineering in substation maintenance, an emphasis in Power Systems is highly preferred. A Professional Engineer (PE) certification and/or master’s in engineering are desired but not required.

The ideal candidate will also possess excellent communications skills; the ability to quickly make prioritization adjustments due to system and operational needs; have a thorough understanding of various regulations unique to substations, i.e. EPA, Wildlife Protection, etc
