Substation Relay Protection Engineer

Colorado Springs Utilities is seeking a Protection Engineer to join the Engineering Design group. Our transmission system is growing, and we are building our protection engineering team for the future.

In this role, you will work alongside a Principal Protection Engineer, where your skills and knowledge and theirs can be coalesced, additionally this engineer will mentor you as you develop an understanding of the protection philosophies and policies for Colorado Springs Utilities. You will use your engineering expertise to produce quality and accurate relay settings to ensure that the substation equipment and controls will serve the needs of the Colorado Springs Utilities transmission and distribution systems today, tomorrow and into the future.

Key responsibilities:

  • Review and/or develop substation protection relay settings including: transmission and distribution line protection, transformer differentials, bus differentials, breaker failure, etc.

  • Participate and provide input in the development of engineering and construction standards

  • Strengthen technical knowledge as needed for developing system protection relay settings related to system equipment projects

  • Review electrical design packages necessary for installing new and replacing aged electrical system equipment and controls

  • Provide advanced substation technical support through design, construction, commissioning, and energization of substation equipment

  • Run fault studies and provide input into short-circuit models using ASPEN One-Liner

  • Coordinate and develop relaying one-lines for our electrical system

  • Review, monitor, and update PRC, FAC-008, and NERC documentation and serve as Subject Matter Expert for NERC audits

What will it take to be successful in this position? A Bachelor's degree in Power System Engineering or Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program is required for this position; an emphasis in Power Systems is strongly preferred. A Professional Engineer (PE) registration certification is desired but not required. Additionally, the ideal candidate will possess system protection experience with experience in setting development for substation projects. Experience in fault study modeling is preferred, either with ASPEN One-Liner (preferred) or CAPE.
