Transmission Operations Engineer
Colorado Springs Utilities is seeking a Transmission Operations Engineer to join our Electric Operations and Engineering team. In this position you will apply your in depth technical knowledge in transmission engineering in-order-to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the gird. As our Transmission Operations Engineer, you will be responsible for conducting transmission studies using power system flow models to help us determine and develop solutions for optimum system operations. You will work on a variety of projects, maintaining compliance with NERC and WECC reliability requirements.
This position will be filled at either the Senior Project Engineer or Principal Engineer level depending on the qualifications, experience, and certification level of the successful candidate.
In this position, you will be working with a team responsible for:
All aspects of work scope in conducting transmission studies including power flow, transient stability, voltage stability, and post-transient analyses.
Provide operating guidance to system operators, reliability coordinators and management related to substation and protective relaying equipment and systems.
Analyze system protection misoperations.
Maintain familiarity with NERC reliability standards as they relate to operation of the Bulk Electric System, and participate in compliance activities.
Maintain familiarity with WECC reliability requirements, participate in compliance activities, and remain involved with WECC working groups, task forces and regional subcommittees.
Work with the reliability coordinator and neighboring utilities to produce and validate power flow models for use in the operating horizon.
Work closely with transmission operators to ensure reliable operation of the grid; developing solutions for operational problems such as voltage, overload, congestion management etc.
Provide design review on new transmission and generation (conventional and/or renewable) projects. Integrate new and modified generation/substation configurations within and external to CSU. Provide technical expertise for associated metering systems and SCADA/AGC interface.
Work with transmission and distribution planning groups to identify areas requiring upgrades for capacity and voltage control.
Focus on continuous improvement and identify opportunities for improvements in efficiency and accuracy.
Research new developments and technology and make recommendations to management on their feasibility for company operations.
Monitor projects and recommend modifications to increase operating efficiency and ensure compliance with any regulatory requirements.
Operations engineers provide on-call support to system operators, and respond to real-time system events which may include non-standard hours.

What will it take to be successful in this position? A bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering is required for this position (emphasis in power systems preferred), highly qualified candidates will offer Master’s in EE or Ph.D. We are seeking candidates who offer over three years of experience in electric systems operations or similar environment. Additionally, NERC Reliability Authority or System Operation Certification is required; (or the ability to obtain certification within 6 months of employment). Excellent communication and analytical skills are required to be successful in this position.
