Utility Worker (Hourly) – Wastewater Collection, Distribution & Treatment

Colorado Springs Utilities is looking to fill many Utility Worker I positions in our Wastewater Collection, Distribution & Treatment Department. In this role, you will be required to perform shift work while performing routine maintenance in support of construction, repair and maintenance projects. This requires the ability to perform manual labor (which includes heavy lifting, shoveling and working in various types of weather) and general knowledge of basic construction operations. Employees will be working in high traffic areas and required to adhere to appropriate safety practices.

This role will require working overtime, weekends, holidays, and 24-hour call outs as business needs demand. In addition, you will work in hazardous conditions and subject to working in inclement weather.

What you will be doing…

  • Assist in the construction, repair, and maintenance of water and wastewater systems

  • Maintaining and updating records on a daily basis

  • Use hand-operated and electric, pneumatic and hydraulic power tools to assist with wastewater maintenance projects

  • Use jack hammer to raise wastewater infrastructure to grade in streets for access and use asphalt to complete project

  • Support cleaning and CCTV operations of wastewater as needed

  • Gather equipment and parts to complete daily task

  • Attend safety and training courses

  • May rotate across water, wastewater and support services work groups

  • May relocate work locations on short notice

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Who you are…

Ideal candidates will have a high school diploma or GED and six months to two years of related construction experience and must possess a valid driver’s license. A CDL is not required but is preferred. Additionally, we are interested in your skills in the following:

  • Maintaining cooperative working relationships in a team environment

  • General construction principles

  • Basic mathematics

  • General knowledge of blueprints, schematics and mechanics

  • Performing work safely and bringing safety hazards to the attention of others and supervisors

  • Operating equipment such as: tandem dump trucks, utility trailers, wastewater maintenance equipment, water maintenance equipment, asphalt roller, jack hammer, and various pneumatic hand tools.

  • Communicating both verbally and in writing

These positions are classified as an "Hourly” position. As such, if hired, you will be considered an at-will, supplemental full-time non-exempt employee hired for seasonal or short-term work. We anticipate these positions to start on April 6th, lasting into October of 2020 (as dictated by work demands). These is the possibility of an extension, typically not to exceed twenty-four (24) months in total; it may also be for shorter periods of time in the case of seasonal work in which direct control over work is needed. Also understand, if hired, you are eligible for health care benefits, Flex Accounts, EAP, the Wellness Program and for state mandated benefits or those prescribed according to Colorado Springs Utilities Personnel Policies Manual.
