Water Planning and Design Engineer
Colorado Springs Utilities is looking to hire a Water Planning and Design Engineer who will provide engineering support within the Water Planning and Design Section. This section provides engineering services to support various departments within the Water Services Division. The section performs and supports planning, modeling, engineering and design of critical infrastructure related to raw water collection and storage, water treatment, potable and non-potable distribution systems, pumping stations and pipelines This team of dedicated professionals meet the needs of our organization in ensuring infrastructure is planned, engineered, and designed appropriately. The Water Planning and Design Engineer reports to the Engineering Manager and is responsible for supporting and executing a variety of water infrastructure projects.
Primary responsibilities will include but is not limited to:
Water Distribution System Planning and Design: Colorado Springs Utilities owns and operates a complex water distribution system consisting of several pressure zones, pumping stations, tanks and control valves. The candidate will have primary responsibility for conducting distribution modeling, pump system analysis, and operational evaluations to ensure appropriate system improvements meet future needs. The position requires the use of hydraulic modeling and analytical software and understanding of distribution system principals to develop planning, design and technical recommendations for system improvements.
Infrastructure Planning and Design : The candidate will have the opportunity to support and lead small to medium sized projects in the areas of: raw water collection; water treatment; distribution and transmission mains; and potable and non-potable water distribution systems. Opportunities also exist to work with and support other departments in the areas of water resource supply, water system operations, water standards, and wastewater.
Construction Management : The candidate will have the opportunity to serve as a project technical lead and support construction projects and implement various projects.

So, what will it take to be successful in this position? A Bachelor of Science or post graduate degree from an ABET accredited institution in Civil, Environmental, Water Resource, Hydraulic Engineering or related disciplines is required. This position will be filled either at the Project Engineer or Senior Project Engineer level as further described below. Direct distribution system modeling experience is required. Direct experience with InfoWater, EPANET, ArcGIS, and AutoCAD is preferred. A valid driver’s license is required.Starting pay and position placement will commensurate with the incumbent’s experience.
The ideal Senior Engineer level candidate will have a minimum of seven years of direct experience with large water distribution system planning, analysis, modeling, and design. Colorado professional engineering license or licensure via reciprocity within six months is required.
The ideal Project Engineer level candidate will have a minimum of four years of experience in water distribution system modeling, analysis, and design. EIT/FE Certification, Colorado professional engineering license or ability to test within 6 months of employment is desirable.
