AMI Systems Engineer

The Advanced Utilities’ team at Colorado Springs Utilities performs requirements management, technology solution development, implementation, operations, maintenance and support for standards-based Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) applications, tools, networks, devices, and metrology. These solutions are defined with a focus on business-driven, standards-based requirements engineering following National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Smart Grid architecture. As an AMI Systems Engineer , you will provide subject matter expertise in the Gas, Water, Wastewater and Electric domains of Utilities AMI information systems, AMI data analytics, AMI networks, metrology, sensors, controllers, and all forms of AMI management systems.

In this job, you will:

  • Support the Advanced Utilities’ team, AMI Program, and AMI associated projects. You will formulate and define technical specifications, systems scope, and objectives based on business and user needs, Smart Grid standards, and have a good understanding of applicable business systems and industry requirements.

  • Translate Business Process Models, requirements, and capabilities into functional and non-functional technical requirements to support Request-For-Proposal solicitations. You will be responsible for end-to-end systems engineering of the AMI solutions platform, assuring network & measurement performance, data quality and device control management are all engineered to functional specifications.

  • Collaborate with stakeholders from Service Lines, Customer Service, Information Technology Systems, AMI Operations and AMI Meter Shop to coordinate solutions development, and continuously improve existing and new solutions.

  • Analyze and recommend solutions for AMI based monitoring and measurement of data analytics.

  • Provide technical support for AMI communication technology and hardware.

As an AMI Systems Engineer, your work will include initial definition and design followed with systems verification, under the leadership of the Advanced Utilities Architect and in close collaboration with the Information Technology team.

Applicable skills include:

  • Systems Engineering work in a multiple service Utility domain

  • Analyzing speeds, feeds, interfaces, data quality and security

  • An Information Technology related or Engineering degree is preferred; A Bachelor of Science degree and relevant experience (5-7 years+), will be considered as well

  • Superb technical competency, defining mission-critical infrastructure and ensuring the highest levels of availability, performance, and security

  • Understanding of AMI networks to include IPV6 mesh, field trouble shooting tools, fiber opt Networks & cellular based backhauls

  • Writing technical procedures and developing evaluation criteria

  • Coordinating projects, communication, interpersonal skills and ability to give presentations

  • Experience preferred with ownership (subject matter expert, vendor relationships and support roadmaps) of AMI solution components (e.g. frameworks and tools, AMI head-end systems, meter data management, distributed energy management, networks, demand response systems, home energy management systems, metrology, controllers, and sensors (vibration, motion, temperature, pressure, quality, voltage, power, amperage, instrumentation, status, alerts, diagnostics, etc.)

  • Produce quality, accurate, prompt, and reliable AMI analytic reports

  • Ability to adjust to multiple and changing priorities, remaining flexible and open

  • Operate honestly and ethically, able to build trust

  • Keep current on relevant utility issues, maintaining and expanding knowledge of relevant issues and understand the business

  • Communicate clearly and concisely in writing and verbally
